Caduceus Society

As this year’s committee chair, what does being a member of the Caduceus Society mean to you?

It means a great deal to me — this Society has a long history and amazing members.

Being a member of the Caduceus Society is about giving back to our Community. The physicians in this Society know what a great community we have, and we want to use our expertise, compassion, and funds to give back to help impact the health of the people we share our home with.

And how do the efforts of the Caduceus Society benefit patients and families?

I personally am proud of our Society that has provided support in numerous areas such as: programs for smoking cessation; bike helmet awareness and purchasing helmets for children who couldn’t afford them; and whose members have given significant time and financial support for important services and programs such as the Coborn Cancer Center, CentraCare Heart and Vascular, Clara’s House, the CentraCare Breast Center and so many more.

We also honor physicians that have gone above and beyond in their philanthropic deeds with our annual Caduceus Society Award. Previous winners have given significant time and effort in developing programs for the underserved in our community and beyond. For example, the program to repair cleft lip and palates in central Minnesota and Guatemala, or the effort to develop a Dementia Center to help individuals and families as they deal with this relentless process that strips people of their most important memories. And we have members that had the vision and unending resolve to create centers of excellence that we take for granted now: Scott Davis, MD, ICU; Nick Reuter, MD, and Harold Windschitl, MD, Coborn Cancer Center. These are but a few of the gifts that Caduceus Society members have given to all of us.

Anything else you’d like to share with us about your involvement?

The Caduceus Society is a badge of honor for those that deliver care to the people of Central Minnesota through their philanthropic kindness, caring efforts, and love of this community.

Drs. Jolkovsky & Lalley receive 2018 Caduceus Award

Merryn Jolkovsky, MD, and Patrick Lalley, MD, CentraCare Health Palliative Care program, were co-honored Feb. 28 with the Caduceus Award. This award recognizes the outstanding work of Central Minnesota physicians who exhibit humanitarian medical efforts locally or around the world.

Drs. Jolkovsky and Lalley were nominated because of their advocacy for patients and families during end-of-life care in palliative medicine.

• Advisory board member, Prairie Drifter organic farm in Hutchinson (provides CSE shares for CentraCare Health employees)
• Provides Grand Rounds palliative care education at the Health Plaza for Coborn Cancer Center staff
• Co-authored article for MN Family Physician Journal on palliative care for family physicians
• Extensive humanitarian work in Bolivia, Peru
• Catholic Social Services board member
• Volunteer at Quiet Oaks weekly, along with Terry Pladson, MD

Palliative Care, a physician-led service based at St. Cloud Hospital, is a medical specialty that provides patient- and family-centered care through a team approach. Palliative Care optimizes quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of assessment, early identification and treatment of pain and other problems — physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

In appreciation for their commitment to serving patients and families, the CentraCare Health Foundation Caduceus fund will be making a $1,000 donation to the Palliative Care program in honor of Drs. Jolkovsky and Lalley.
