Osteopathic Manipulative TreatmentWhat is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is used by osteopathic physicians (DOs) to treat joint misalignments and reduce soft tissue tension. DOs are fully-licensed physicians who receive intensive musculoskeletal training, including the use of OMT, in addition to traditional medical training.

Why use Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

The goal of OMT is to properly align the body so it can function at its best.

What conditions are treated with OMT?

OMT is used to treat many conditions, including: asthma, carpal tunnel, GI disorders, plantar fasciitis, headaches, menstrual pain or sinusitis.

What can you expect at your OMT appointment?

To schedule an appointment for OMT at CentraCare Family Health Center, please call 320-240-3157.

First, the physician will talk with you about your symptoms and health history. The DO will feel the muscles and bones for dysfunction to determine if OMT would be appropriate. Lastly, your physician will perform the therapy treatment or prescribe a treatment plan.

What techniques are used?

DOs are trained to use similar techniques as massage therapists, physical therapists and chiropractors. You and your physician will decide which techniques may be most beneficial to you based on your type of musculoskeletal dysfunction, any chronic illnesses, your preferences and the skills of the physician.

What should you expect following OMT?

Hopefully, you feel an immediate relief of your symptoms. Some people have a delayed response and do not feel relief for hours or even days after the treatment. Depending on the type and duration of symptoms, you may need additional treatments. Your physician will talk with you about a follow-up plan if needed. Following OMT, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and flush any toxins released from the massage technique. Avoid heavy physical activity for the rest of the day to decrease the risk of having your symptoms reoccur. You may have soreness in your muscles following OMT, but it should resolve within 24 to 48 hours.
