Patient Instructions - Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration

You have had a procedure involving the insertion of a small needle into your thyroid gland. The needle took out a small amount of tissue that will be examined by a doctor that specializes in looking at tissues. Your doctor will notify you of the results of your biopsy. Since this procedure required the insertion of a needle, there is slight risk of bleeding, tenderness and rarely an infection. 

Activity

• You may return to work today.

• Avoid any vigorous physical activity for 24 hours.

Symptom control

• If you have pain and tenderness at the site, you may take your usual or recommended pain medication.

• Do not take any aspirin the day of the biopsy.

• You may feel more comfortable lying with your head partially raised.

• Avoid strain on your neck by putting both hands behind your neck to support your head.

• You may develop a sore throat.

Biopsy site care

• You may have a small amount of bleeding at the site.

• If this happens, you should lie down and apply gentle direct pressure to the bleeding for 10 minutes.
  When the bleeding has stopped, apply a new band-aide.

• You may develop bruises where the needle was inserted.

• Bruising is normal.

• The bruises should fade in a week to 10 days.

• Keep the band-aide on for 24 hours, then you may remove the band-aide and shower.

• You may put on a clean band-aide or leave the site uncovered.

When to call your provider

• If you have a fever over 100 degrees.

• Increased redness or swelling at the site.

• Persistent drainage or pain around the site.

• If you experience persistent bleeding, difficulty breathing, neck swelling or difficulty swallowing, please have someone take you to the nearest emergency facility.
