What is an adult hospitalist?

Adult hospitalists are internal medicine specialists who provide patient care in a hospital setting only. They follow patients who are referred to them from other physicians or Emergency Trauma Center patients who need to be hospitalized. After hospital discharge, patients return to their primary physician or are assigned to a physician who will provide follow-up care in a clinic setting.

What type of training do adult hospitalists have?

These doctors have had at least:

• Four years of medical school
• Three years of internal medicine or family medicine residency training

What care can an adult hospitalist provide?

Adult hospitalists provide skilled medical care to their patients on a daily basis and are available for patient and family consultation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They work collaboratively with the primary physician or other specialists as needed to ensure consistent care, and they keep the referring physician informed during the patient's hospital stay.
