Application Criteria

  • Available and qualified to begin work by mid-June of the year for which you are applying
  • Graduated from medical school within five years of application or have patient care experience within five years of application. Medical Schools must appear in one of the following directories:
    • American Osteopathic Association
    • Liaison Committee on Medical Education
    • World Directory of Medical Schools
    • Medical Schools Recognized by the Medical Board of California
  • Verified U.S. clinical experience
  • Be eligible for a Minnesota Board of Medical Practice license
  • Meet the following USMLE or COMLEX exam requirements:
    • Have a maximum of two unsuccessful attempts on all USMLE or COMLEX exams across all portions
    • USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 to be passed within five years of Step 2 (CK) / Level 2 (CE)
  • ECFMG certification for International medical school graduates
    • Current international medical school students certified by residency start date
    • Past international medical school graduates certified for interview selection
  • Our program does not sponsor visas

All applications are accepted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Application deadline is December 31.

Requested Application Materials

  • Official records of board scores (NBME, FLEX, USMLE, COMLEX, LMCC, VQE or FMGEMS)
  • A dean’s letter and two other letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement

Resident Stipend and Benefits

2019-2020 Resident Stipend

  • First-year: $55,762
  • Second-year: $57,478
  • Third-year: $59,456

Additional Benefits

Vacation/Sick Leave

  • 21 days per contract year

Parental Leave

  • Sick benefit may be used for yourself and dependent children 17 years of age or younger during residency training
  • Maternity, paternity, and adoption leave available, but may extend residency and postpone board eligibility

State and National Boards

  • Paid days off for board exams are available at program director’s discretion

Continuing Medical Education & Expense Reimbursement

  • Up to 5 days each year for second- and third-year residents
  • Up to $1000 reimbursement per year for mobile devices, personal computer, software, conference expenses, and clinical textbooks and journals
  • Dues for American Academy of Family Physicians, Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians, and Minnesota Medical Association paid by program


  • Resident and family coverage available for medical and dental insurance
  • Professional liability coverage provided for activities within the course and scope of resident duties at no cost

Additional Benefits

  • Meals for lecture series are paid for by the program
  • A meal allowance is provided to residents when on call
  • Free parking
  • You are reimbursed up to $2500 based on eligible receipts from reasonable expenses for the circumstances of your move.

Please call if you are unsure of the status of your application. The faculty will review all applications and invite selected candidates for personal interviews.

Interviews are held from October to January, on weekdays between 8:00 am and 2:30 pm. Dinner and one night's lodging the night prior to the interview are provided by the residency program.

Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Minnesota law requires physicians to pass a criminal background study before having direct patient contact. Residents must complete a background study prior to entering residency. Failure to pass the background study is grounds for dismissal.

Medical Student Rotations/Clerkships

2- to 4-week medical student rotations/clerkships are available for 3rd and 4th year medical students. However, observerships are not available at this time.
