Discover how your body is preparing for birth as part of our in-person Childbirth & Newborn Series. The series will prepare you for the big event by revealing comfort measures and relaxation techniques. You’ll also leave with knowledge regarding the emotions of being a new parent and the miraculous changes baby will undergo from womb to world.
This series contains 4 classes, which take place once weekly, for 4 weeks.
Class Session 1
Pregnancy: Gain an understanding of fetal development, body changes, common discomforts and warning signs. Learn about the importance of nutrition and exercise during pregnancy to support well-being.
Labor: Learn about preterm labor, signs of labor and the stages of labor. Recognize the different phases of labor and develop strategies to cope with the physical and emotional challenges that arise.
Class Session 2
Comfort Techniques: Discuss the importance of birth plans and creating effective labor support systems. Learn about non-medical comfort measures. Explore a variety of physical and mental relaxation techniques to promote comfort during labor.
Medical Pain Management: Learn more about available options for medical pain management such as nitrous oxide, analgesics and epidurals.
Class Session 3
Embrace this defining life moment and learn more about different positions for pushing, vaginal and cesarean birth, hospital resources for mom and baby and the emotions of being a new parent.
Medical Procedures: Receive information to help make informed choices about medical procedures. Learn about IVs, monitoring during labor, induction and augmentation methods, and interventions that can assist in the safe delivery of the baby. Understanding these procedures will empower you to actively participate in decision-making throughout the birthing process.
Cesarean Birth: Learn about cesarean birth, including anesthesia options, the surgical process, associated risks, and post-surgical recovery. Gain valuable insights into what to expect during and after a cesarean birth.
Postpartum: Understand the physical changes that occur after childbirth, potential warning signs, and strategies to promote healing and well-being. You’ll also be introduced to emotional adjustments and the importance of establishing healthy habits.
Class Session 4
This class focuses on newborn care. In this course, you will explore a range of topics, including skin-to-skin contact, newborn appearance, feeding techniques, rooming-in, circumcision considerations, newborn testing, and providing care for your baby at home. By understanding these aspects of newborn care, you will be better prepared to forge a strong bond and create lasting memories with your little one while ensuring his or her well-being.
It is best, but not required, that you and your labor support person complete these classes by the 35th week of pregnancy. Please register early to ensure you get into the classes of your choice.
