Change can be stressful, and changes related to becoming a parent or expanding a family are no different. While on this journey, you may will feel a range of emotions and will experience both ups and downs. For these reasons, CentraCare now offers two online support groups on the topics of “Family Wellness” and “Your Growing Baby.” At these support groups, you will connect with other parents and get access to helpful tools and resources without the need to leave the comfort of your home.

These live, online support groups are for parents of babies from the newborn stage up to 12 weeks of age. Using WebEx, live instructors will provide both education and support. A series of five total support group sessions will be offered, with each session focusing on a different topic. Sessions will take place Mondays from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Becoming Family: Focus on Family Wellness

Mondays, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

This online support group focuses on family wellness. We will be joined each week by CentraCare Psychotherapist Angela Williams, who specializes in helping women and families. Angela will give a short presentation to help you learn about family wellness in a safe space. The bulk of the time will be spent in open discussion, so come with questions!

Week 1 – Family Dynamics & Role Changes

Is this your first baby or are you adding to your family? A new baby affects the dynamics of the entire family. For this reason, it is important to talk about managing boundaries and expectations — for both yourself and other family members. Here, we will focus on how family dynamics can shift and change with a new addition to the family.

Week 2 – Emotions & Parenthood

Pregnant and postpartum women often feel bombarded with society’s messages about how they “should” think and feel. The reality is the postpartum period is different for everyone and can be filled with all kinds of emotions. The important thing is knowing your resources and getting help when it is needed. Here, we will explore the difference between “baby blues” and postpartum depression/anxiety, as well as other mental health issues that can arise. We also will provide tips for staying emotionally healthy.

Week 3 – Self-Care & Stress Management

Sleep, exercise and social support are some of the most important aspects of good self-care. We will talk about the value of having good self-care for all members of the family. We will also discuss ways to help manage social isolation and stress.

Week 4 – Highs & Lows of Parenthood

Feeling ambivalent about pregnancy and motherhood is normal. Being a parent will most likely be one of the hardest and most joyful tasks you will ever experience. Parenting brings out vulnerabilities. Here, we explore the concept of balance amongst the many highs and lows of parenthood and talk about being kind to oneself.

Week 5 – Returning to Work & the Journey Forward

Are you returning to work or staying home to raise your family? Either way, settling back into life can be an adjustment. Here, we will discuss ways to make the transition easier for the entire family.
