Through a combination of discussions and hands-on activities, this weekend course provides a supportive space to learn about pregnancy, labor and the postpartum experience. You’ll feel better equipped to make informed choices, advocate for your needs, and approach childbirth and early parenthood with confidence.
Topics covered during this class include:
Pregnancy: Gain an understanding of fetal development, body changes, common discomforts and warning signs. Learn about the importance of nutrition and exercise during pregnancy to support well-being.
Labor: Learn about preterm labor, signs of labor and the stages of labor. Recognize the different phases of labor and develop strategies to cope with the physical and emotional challenges that arise.
Comfort Techniques: Discuss the importance of birth plans and creating effective labor support systems. Explore a variety of physical and mental relaxation techniques to promote comfort during labor. Learn about non-medical comfort measures, as well as medical pain management options.
Medical Procedures: Receive information to help make informed choices about medical procedures. Learn about IVs, monitoring during labor, induction and augmentation methods, and interventions that can assist in the safe delivery of the baby. Understanding these procedures will empower you to actively participate in decision-making throughout the birthing process.
Cesarean Birth: Learn about cesarean birth, including anesthesia options, the surgical process, associated risks, and post-surgical recovery. Gain valuable insights into what to expect during and after a cesarean birth.
Postpartum: Understand the physical changes that occur after childbirth, potential warning signs, and strategies to promote healing and well-being. You’ll also be introduced to emotional adjustments and the importance of establishing healthy habits and basic newborn feeding practices.
Newborn care classes are offered separately.
It is best, but not required, that you and your labor support person complete these classes by the 35th week of pregnancy. Please register early to ensure you get into the classes of your choice.
